In the last blog I talked about having an understanding of the principle of a technique in order to execute it effectively. Today I want to talk about the next most frequently asked question by all levels…what is the perfect self defence technique?
I’m going to burst everyone’s bubble of anticipation and intrigue here and tell you that there is no perfect self defence technique. *cue sad sighs*
It will depend on your objective, for instance, whether or not you need to disable somebody so you can run to safety, or maybe you’re with your kids, so you have to subdue and hold down somebody until help arrives.
The second aspect is your physical ability. For example, if you’re quite short, maybe it’s not an option to do some sort of palm heel to the nose or perhaps your attacker is larger it might take more than one strike. In essence, looking for that perfect self defence technique is not a viable option because there are so many variables that will affect your decision as well as what is the best option. It comes down to what is the most perfect technique for your situation, circumstance and ability. This is where understanding the principles that fuel the techniques comes to play. Without this contextual understanding of how-to and why-is, it is much harder to make those appropriate decisions in a reactive state.
It is also important, not only to understand but to apply the principles in your training and under a stressful situation. Using the BJJ example from last week’s blog. Execution of an effective choke, relies on your ability to subdue the other person by applying constant pressure. The choke by itself won’t necessarily work if the person is flailing about and using their body weight as leverage to loosen your hold. Through understanding, contextualisation and application, you will be able to perform the ‘perfect technique’ for your circumstance in a high stress situation.
